Michael Lloyd has been a teacher for the South Lyon Community Schools since 2005. He has taught kindergarten and fourth grade in his tenure with South Lyon. Michael is passionate about student engagement in the education process and he believes that the South Lyon Educational Foundation will improve student engagement through the funding of innovative ideas to enhance curriculum.
Tara Hoeksema - Vice-Chair
Tara Hoeksema and her husband, Pat, have been South Lyon community members since 2015. Their two sons attend South Lyon High School and Kent Lake Elementary School, respectively. Tara has practiced in Corporate Marketing and Strategy for the architectural design of educational institutions her entire career. As a passionate parent and Board Vice-Chair, Tara hopes to lend professional insight to contribute to the newly-formed South Lyon Educational Foundation’s success.
Rachael Showerman - Treasurer
Rachael and her husband, Steve, are both graduates of South Lyon High School and returned to their hometown of South Lyon in 2002. Their two daughters at Bartlett Elementary and two daughters at Millennium Middle School represent the fourth generation of their family to attend South Lyon Community Schools. A writer by trade, Rachael believes in the importance of community service and is especially interested in educational initiatives that are creative, innovative and engaging to learners of all socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities.
Michele Lurz - Secretary
Michele and her husband, John, have lived in South Lyon since 2011. They have two sons who currently attend South Lyon Community Schools. Since moving to the area, Michele has been active in the educational community, serving on the Bond Exploration committee and sitting on the school board . As a member of the community, Michele continues to look for ways to support the teachers who care for and educate our children.
Anthony is a current trustee on the South Lyon Community Schools Board of Trustees and is a principal at Frost Middle School in Livonia, Mich. Anthony, his wife, and three sons are residents of Lyon Township. Anthony and his family are excited to support the Foundation as it grows into the substantial, impactful organization it was envisioned to be for the benefit of every SLCS student.
Melissa and her family have lived in South Lyon for more than 20 years. She and her husband have four children, including two daughters who attended South Lyon Community Schools from kindergarten through graduation. Melissa has worked in education for more than 25 years and is currently the superintendent of South Lyon Schools. The South Lyon Educational Foundation has been a dream of her since she became superintendent in 2015, and she is excited to see her dream become a reality.
Carrie and her family have been residents of the South Lyon community since 2004. Carrie has been an active South Lyon Board of Education member since 2013 and with two daughters attending Centennial Middle School and South Lyon High School, the Hanshaws are committed to South Lyon Community Schools and are excited about the changes, growth and opportunities in the district’s future. As a Board member, Hanshaw looks forward to being the liaison between the South Lyon Educational Foundation and South Lyon Community Schools.
Brad and his family have been Lyon Township residents since 2013. With two daughters attending Pearson Elementary, Brad and his wife care deeply about the educational opportunities that will be afforded to their children as they progress through South Lyon Community Schools. A public relations and marketing executive, Brad hopes to use his talents to make a positive impact on the community through his work with SLEF.
Sean and his wife Stephanie (an elementary teacher for South Lyon Community Schools) have three wonderful children and have called Lyon Township home for a number of years. O'Neil is an urban planner and is involved as a volunteer with the South Lyon Junior League as a board member and a coach. He also volunteers with an organization called Winning Futures where he mentors high school students.
Melissa and her husband have been Lyon Township residents since 1998. They have 4 children who have attended South Lyon Schools. They currently have children at Dolsen, Centennial and South Lyon East High School. Melissa is French teacher and world language department chair at Okemos High School where she has taught for the past 20 years. She has a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and is excited about the opportunity to support South Lyon teachers and students.
Michelle and her family have been residents of Lyon Township for four years. She and her husband have a son and daughter attending Hardy Elementary School. She believes SLCS offers an excellent learning environment for staff and children to prosper. Michelle is a Certified Financial Counselor and a member of the finance committee.
